Comment fabrique-t-on

How is a synthetic fuel
actually produced?
electrolyser green hydrogen production Power-to-Liquid e-fuels synthetic fuels industrial process

A synthetic fuel is produced in two fundamental steps. First, renewable electricity (or natural geological hydrogen) is used to produce hydrogen H₂. Then this hydrogen is combined with captured CO₂ to produce a liquid fuel via well-established chemical processes.

The result is a fuel chemically identical to fossil fuel — but without fossil carbon. It can be stored in existing tanks, distributed via the current petrol station network, and used in combustion engines without modification.

This is what is called a drop-in fuel: it replaces fossil fuel without new infrastructure. A unique property among all energy alternatives for transport.

If natural geological hydrogen from Lorraine can be produced at €0.50/kg — FDE's stated 2028 target — the production cost of e-petrol falls to approximately €1.60/L. Economic parity with fossil fuels becomes achievable without subsidy.

Why e-fuels complement electrification — and do not compete with it
  • Liquid battery — surplus renewable electricity (spring, summer) is converted to e-fuel, stored in existing tanks, and used in winter without touching the grid
  • 300 million existing vehicles — cars, trucks, aircraft and ships currently in service cannot be replaced before 2035; e-fuels decarbonise them immediately
  • Grid saturation — grid operators (RTE, Elia) acknowledge that full electrification of road transport would require hundreds of billions in additional grid infrastructure
  • Exportability — e-fuel produced in Lorraine or Chile can be exported worldwide by tanker, like oil · unlike electricity
  • Non-electrifiable sectors — long-haul aviation, maritime, heavy industry and defence have no credible electrification alternative · e-fuels are their only decarbonisation pathway
